Packing for Trek
MJ and Abi Pack for Trek
What Should I Pack?
We have created an approved list of all the items that you will need for the trek. The list should be downloaded and printed out. You can use the list to check off the items as you pack them. If an item is not on the list, please don’t bring it. All items listed are needed so please bring them. Remember, everything must fit in your 5-gallon bucket (see below) except your overnight/sleeping gear.
5 Gallon Bucket
Each individual’s personal items must be able to fit into a 5 gallon bucket with a lid (NOT including your overnight sleeping gear and heavy coat ). The buckets will be provided by the stake. The bucket serves a number of functions. It allows each trek family to organize and pack their handcarts, keeps your gear waterproof, and provides a seat for you to sit on. The pioneers were allowed 17 pounds of gear when they came West. And NO, they didn’t get to have 5 gallon buckets!
For information about what pioneer clothing to wear, please check out the clothing web page here: Clothing
The handcart companies were under strict guidelines as to what they could and could not bring because a handcart is pulled by the traveler. Pioneers were also focused on leaving out things that are a burden to the spirit and its growth. Please print and review the PIONEER TREK INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT LIST and follow the instructions of what to bring and what not to bring. Thank you!
